Most of the Korean prefer made in Korea in any kind of stuffs, even a small component insides MP3 players. Because of this strong sense of nationalism, they come out with a reputable brand, Telechips, in the digital audio player industry.
Generally, its position is between Sigmatel and Philips‘ decoders. It has better sound quality than Sigmatel and yet it can still maintain lower price than Philips. Due to the stragegic position, Telechips has the supports from many Korean manufacturers, such as DATUM, DEC, WEWA, and so on. Thus, it makes Telechips a reputable brand in the industry.
The most common model of Telechips’ solution is TCC73x series.
The TCC730 is a single SOC chip for use in digital audio encoder/decoder applications. It embeds a 16-bit RISC MCU and a 24-bit DSP, which gives maximum flexibility by supporting firmware upgrades. Most of functions related to digital audio encoding/decoding algorithms and system control are provided with firmware packages. The firmware packages consist of firmware object libraries that are intended to be run on DSP and/or MCU with dedicated H/Ws and application manuals.
Samsung is another rising star that cannot be left out! Recent trend shows that more models from iRiver and MPIO maybe features Samsung’s ARM processor. It was developped by Samsung, iRiver and another unknown party, and it was mass produced by Samsung. A 200Mhz ARM processor likes “ARM SAMSUNG SA58450X01 KB117KS” really impresses us, at least the execution of OGG in 500kbps and 48Khz. Anyway, there is no official statement regarding the Samsung ARM yet.
