Siren MP3 Player: Q&A
December 3rd, 2005 by Chi An
I have seen that many of you are looking for information of Siren 512MB MP3 Player. It has been the hottest topic discussed here. Well, I’ve compile a small list of frequently asked question about it.
- How to delete/remove songs?
If it is a DRM protected music, you need Windows Media Player to delete it. ( read ). Alternatively, you may do it in My Computer of your Windows. ( read ) - I got the error message “Incorrect format, reformat the player!”
Here is the instruction given by Siren1. Double-click My Computer on the Windows Desktop or in the Start Menu.
2. Locate the Removable Disk (X:) or Player (X:) icon that is associated
with the player. (X: equals the drive letter assigned to the ILO player.)
3. Right-click the Removable Disk (X:) or Player (X:) icon.
4. Click Format….
Reformatting your ILO player will result in the deletion of all tracks and
settings on the ILO player.
5. If you are sure you want to reformat your player, click Start. - Is there a case for it?
Currently there is no accessory specially made for it. However, someone has used zippo lighter belt holder for it. - How to lock the keys?
There is no key lock function for this model. - Is there a website for Siren?
Yes, the website is sirenplayer.com - How can I contact Siren’s customer service representatives?
You may contact them at support@sirenplayer.com or phone number 254 224 0222
Although I’m not a user of Siren 512MB MP3 Player, I have to give a big thumb up to Siren’s support team. I got my answer emailed in less than 10 minutes.

I think you probably need to update your firmware. But I’m not sure does Siren provide it or not
December 14th, 2005 at 8:33 am
I’ve bought a Siren512MB for my 13 year old son for a Christmas gift. What is meant by 12 songs being preloaded. will he be able to add his own songs?
thanks
denise
December 14th, 2005 at 10:28 am
These 12 songs are preloaded into your Siren as you buy without extra charges. Your son definitely can add whatever song he likes as long as the format is suppported by Siren.

This is my sencond Siren MP3 512.
I’m having the same problem as i did
with the first one. The battery ran dead,

it says is searching song files. It freezes
like that and i can do nothing..not even
power it off. Is it possible both of them
are defected and the player is junk???

Q: My song is stuck in searching for song files, or in updating index, or my songs seem to disappear from the player, what do I do?
A: Sometimes, after transferring songs to the Siren player, they seem to disappear from the Siren’s index or perhaps the Siren will lock up and report “NO FILES FOUND”, or even freeze at the “UPDATING INDEX” screen. This problem is common and is caused by certain music software such as Windows Media Player. Media programs such as WMP tend to use a categorization scheme to organize music files on storage devices such as the Siren Player. However, it is this categorization scheme that causes the Siren Player not to be able to recognize the media files that are transferred to it. WMP uses a “hidden folder” technique in which it places the media files to keep track of all the media information, but the Siren player does not have the ability to read these subdirectories. Formatting the player then removing the “create folder hierarchy” option from Windows Media player is usually all it takes to correct this problem.
March 24th, 2006 at 2:16 am
As the cause might be the buggy firmware, I would suggest you directly contact Siren/iLo custormer support through email and request for a new version of firmware.

When I first got my siren it was great, my songs would download right away, I could listen to them within seconds. But now whenever I turn on my siren it’s stuck at searching song files and on the WMP the “create folder hierarchy” isn’t clicked so I am completely lost. I have downloaded quite a bit of songs and I’d really like to listen to them. PLEASE HELP

I was having the incorrect format error on my Ilo MP3 Player (a Walmart brand supported by SirenPlayer.Com). SirenPlayer provides excellent customer service. I just called them a minute ago, they sent me the firmware “fix” via e-mail in 2 minutes, and then 2 more minutes I was done. My player works again. Kudo’s to SirenPlayer for excellent support. BTW - I don’t think they make the ILO but they support it.
May 16th, 2006 at 4:22 pm
After trying for serveral hours to download music on your stupid product I have finally decided to give up. This is my second mp3 player from your company in 3 days and they both sucked. One would download the songs only to delete them 20 seconds later and the other kept turning off. Your product sucks and after reading all these emails I feel I’m not being to harsh. Lucky for me I will be able to return your crap product and get something better and the rate your going I’d pick a 8 track over your mp3 players. Hell anything so long as its not made buy your company. You guys should sell toliet paper instead of mp3’s cause your product is full of sh*t.
Nothing but hate for ya. Your enemy for life Lonie Lonie

September 15th, 2006 at 7:44 am
I have had my mp3 player for a while and I was wondring how to delete songs. P.S. my mp3 is an ilo.
October 10th, 2006 at 1:02 am
You probably need to reload the firmware for the player. I contacted the support department and they sent me a link to the firmware installer. After running the software my Mp3 player is functional once again. Here you go:
Thank you for contacting Siren Audio Support. In order to flash your player’s firmware, please follow these steps:
Please connect the player to a rear USB port on the computer. The display should show “USB Connected”. (If not, please press the power button.)
Please make sure that all unused programs and applications are closed. You can close the applications by closing as many of the icons in the lower right hand corner (by the clock) as possible.
Download the correct Firmware
Click here to download the Siren 512 Firmware
- https://system.netsuite.com/core/media/media.nl?id=16075&c=432868&h=68a87fdefb1fe2d5903b&_xt=.zip
Click here to download the ILO 116 Firmware
- https://system.netsuite.com/core/media/media.nl?id=16076&c=432868&h=b25618a8ea7ead5c9573&_xt=.zip
Click Open to initiate the download
Double click on the ILO or Siren folder icon. There will be 14 icons.
There will be a Setup icon that looks like a box with a blue line on it; please double click on this.
Then click Run - this will open the Install Wizard.
The Install Wizard has the instructions on the screen as you go through it.
Once the firmware has installed, please click the Start menu, then Programs.
Look for the icon that says ILO or Siren, and then double click the Firmware Update to install to the player. Depending on how severe the corruption to the firmware on the player is, you might have to do this step 2 or 3 times in order for it to completely repair the firmware.
Additional Tip: The player itself requires a lot of power while flashing the firmware. We suggest disconnecting all USB devices from the computer except the MP3 player and mouse; you can reconnect your keyboard once the firmware has been flashed.
This should resolve the problem. If you have any further questions or concerns, please feel free to reply to support@sirenplayer.com (including the entire e-mail thread) or call us at 254-224-0222. We are open Monday – Friday, from 8:00AM to 8:00PM CST.

I have windows xp and cannot install anything. I made my playlist but message says no device found. WHY?
November 7th, 2006 at 11:46 am
My daughters MP3 player is having the same issues as all of you mentioned. This thing is crap! How she said she resolves the searching for files issue is locking the device trying to turn it on then unlocking the device and turning it on waiting a few seconds and it should resume. Kinda a crappy solution to a crappy device i guess hope this helps everyone. I would’nt recommend this product to my enemies. GL all.
November 7th, 2006 at 12:16 pm
Sorry I guess this wasn’t detailed enough. Pop out the battery, return the battery lock the device then attempt to turn it on, once it comes on and goes back off put the device in the unlock position and turn it back on wait a few seconds and it should work. GL again with a crappy device.

We bought the Siren 4GB last night. The box says it is compatible with Windows 2000 (that is the reason we bought it). However when we got it home and tried to figure out how to use it, we discovered that you need Windows Media Player 10 which will only run with Windows XP. We have Windows Media Player9.How can we download songs off the internet using 9? I like it so far and don’t want to have to return it but what is the use of it if I have to buy cd’s to have music on the MP3? We did get the music off my cd’s and they work great. Please help me.
December 30th, 2006 at 5:28 am
I have the 4MG, and I can’t even explore it. I see folders, but I know I have some stuff I stored to bring to the office. I can’t see ANYTHING I’ve downloaded onto it. But I know the stuff is there. I can’t see the songs I downloaded, but they play! Grrrr…

Q:my dad bought me a siren mp3 player for christmas and not even 24 hours after i opened it, one of the ear phones stopped working, also it says the battery is supposed to last up to 16 hours or something well i can turn it on for about 10 minutes and half of the battery would then be gone. me and my mom were trying ot find one online but all the stores dont have them anymore and the web site only has two kinds and mine is neither of them. is there any way i could trade it in for a different one could mine just have something wrong with it? where could i find out at?
A:Ok first off make sure your ear buds are in all the way. I was like “Oh shit my ear buds are broke” but I just didnt have them plugged in all the way. And the batter usaly will ‘go up’ alot if you turn it off then turn it back on. Also that battery it came with may suck because of the fact that it may have been in there for years!
Hope this helps!

I just bought a Siren 4GB MP3 player. When connecting to my computer it would show up as a device in the Hardware Manager and it showed up in Windows Media Player as a device. However, it did not show up in Windows Explorer or My Computer so I couldn’t access it that way to move files around. However, I found the problem. If I connected to my computer with the Hold button in the Hold position suddenly it connects normally where I can see it in Explorer and My Computer. I haven’t seen anyone else describe this problem or a solution, but I hope this helps someone.

Mine did the “got stuck indexing thing”, I defragged it (just like you do with your pc), and moved all the songs wihich were listed by ‘unknown album’ into just one album. One or the other fixed it. Have had great service out of mine for about 2 years. No complaints!

Answer to Marc T. Click on the little white siren thing. It should open up the window with all your music on it. Click and drag the song you don’t want and drop it in the trash can. That should get the job done.

Wow sounds like this thing really sucks….the right side of the ear piece is working when it wants to. Only 2 days old. Hmmm
January 5th, 2008 at 11:01 am
I bought a 4 GB Siren MP3 player about 3 months ago and have had nothing but problems with it since I got it. I accidently threw the packaging away, which was a big mistake, because then I could not return it. I then went through the company who sent me a replacement player, and it works just as bad as the one that I sent in. So if you are doing research and have not bought one yet, DO NOT BUY THIS PLAYER, it is a piece of crap and a waste of $100. My newest problem is that I turn it on and it says Warning, Boot Error and shuts down immediately. The other problems that I have had with it are that the player says it has no files, but when it is plugged into my computer it shows all the files. My first problem was that the player would just shut itself down for no reason and return to the first song, instead of where it left off. I have called the comapny several times and none of their suggestions have fixed the problem. I have tried leaving the battery out for a couple of days and starting it, downloaded the firmware 3 or 4 times and have unistalled Windows Media Player 11, and went back to version 10. Nothing is working. Has anyone else experienced any of these problems and have any suggestions. Thanks!
January 13th, 2008 at 8:23 am
I perchused a ilo mp3 player. It was working perfectly then it dropped and it stopped working and I dont know any more stores who sell this oproduct. E mail me back so I can see if i can get another product.
January 23rd, 2008 at 11:35 am
After 3 months of use my ilo has a message “Searching Song Files” I tried replacing the battery I tried the firmware route and it still has the message any ideas?
I tried locking it and turning it on like Heidi suggested on the site no luck
January 26th, 2008 at 12:54 pm
Your product is a piece of junk. I bought it last April and by May the screen on it cracked and this orange colored stuff was messing up the view so I couldn’t make out the song. Then it would cause my pC not to be able to read it when I plugged it in. But it would only do this off and on. NOTHING is wrong with the USB port, I tried other things in it. Then tonight the screen gets more cracked and it will read the drive but I open the folder on the computer and there are no files on there like it is empty. I click on “properties” and it said there was over 6/8ths of the drive used up. The player itself, although I could barely read it, said I needed to free up some space. This thing is the biggest piece of crap I have ever invested money in and I will not be buying any of your products again.

Siren 4 GB Mp3 Player
…..One other thing I should mention. The Siren rep I spoke to told me to disconnect the player from the USB cable and remove the battery from the player for 40 minutes. Then, after the player has been idle for those 40 minutes and with the battery still removed from the player, run the flash exe. Then reinsert the battery.

I havent had the ilo mp3 player for over two months when the button got pressed in and it will not turn on. Do you think that they could fix it and where do I send it to.

Alex, just take the player apart with a screw driver and see what is wrong inside, if the button is just pressed in, just push it out from the inside.

I’m trying to put more songs on my mom’s Siren, but it tells me there is no more room. Do I have to remove the current songs and then reformat it? If I do have to reformat, is it worth the risk of this “firmware” that seems to cause big problems for some and no problems for others? Any help would be appreciated.
