Insignia 4GB Video MP3 Player Reviewed

I’d got the Insignia MP3 player unpacked and now here are some of my thoughts. The model I received is Insignia 4GB Video MP3 Player NS-DVB4G. Frankly, I didn’t heard about Insignia before. It is BestBuy’s own brand of MP3 player. It works with BestBuy DigitalMusicStore (actually the Rhapsody).
At first look, it doesn’t look sexy; no fancy design, no slim body. But it does playback video, FM radio, recording, and Bluetooth-enabled that an iPod Nano can’t do. What’s more it is $40 cheaper than an iPod Nano 4GB. You can get all these at just $160 at BestBuy.
As a budget MP3 player, I don’t expect Insignia to have top sound quality. But it don’t fail me, at least
I’m impressed by its easy navigation and interface menu. Most of time, I need only press on “Menu”, “Play/Pause” and the control wheel. The only bad thing about the design could be it doesn’t look friendly for left-handed fellows like me. The Insignia features a 2.2″ LCD display. The screen is bright and large enough to watch video when you are mobile. Video is playing smooth on it but picture quality still need to be improved.
If you have little more budget, you may add-on a microSD card to expand the memory or get Bluetooth headphones. I would rather suggest you to get a good headphones like Shure E series. Not just get some improvement on sound quality. You can even share your favourites music or video with your love one. Ya, the Insignia has dual phone jack. Nice huh! It is stated that Insignia has 20 hours of battery life. I have not tested this yet since I’d only done a quick test. But no worries, the battery is replaceable and can be easily found at Partsearch.
I give it overall 7/10. The Insignia 4GB Video MP3 Player is a good choice for those who are looking for feature rich and budget MP3 player. It is suitable for a first-time user.

Have you tested Bluetooth with it? I’m wondering if you have the device on HOLD if you can still change the volume and tracks via the Bluetooth headsets. Most stereo headsets have volume and track change buttons and a hold button the device itself plus the ability to change it via the headset would be ideal for something like the gym, running or bike riding.
Thanks

I haven’t try with Bluetooth headphone yet. But once the HOLD button is turn on, other buttons will not work.

The buttons on the headset do work when the unit’s hold switch is on hold.

does the MP3 work with iTunes and iTunes purchased songs/videos?
i have heard mixed answers.

No, this device doesn’t work with iTunes. It works with Windows-DRM music stores and does it nicely. When I sync with a Rhapsody subscription download, it also downloads the album’s cover art to the player for display.
The video quality for this player is actually better than I expected. I replaced a Creative Zen MicroPhoto with it because the Zen’s harddrive finally died on me.
I’m actually very impressed by this budget player and while the sound could have better bass to it, it’s still a great purchase overall.

I heard from the sales person at best buy, who is left handed, that there is a setting for left handed people. Give that a try.

Thanks guy, will look for left-handed setting

I just purchased (well, my dad did anyway) an Insignia and so far I’m fairly satisfied but I’ve run into a little problem: I can’t delete tracks from the player! I tried doing the same thing I did with my other player (a Sansa)–plug in the device, open Rhapsody, select the device’s icon, right-click the song I want to delete, select Delete from the drop-down list and voila! I’m done. I tried doing that with the Insignia but I didn’t get a drop-down list. I tried using the #Delete button and /that/ didn’t work. What am I doing wrong?

The player does support left-handed operation which you access under settings. It also plays
itunes songs which has to be dragged and dropped
into the player when it is set as msc mode and you drag and drop the itunes music in to the root folder of the player. To do this you need to use
the hold button on the player, then connect it to
your computer, then open my computer and go to
the mass storage device and click open or explore.
Find the root folder and drag and drop the music
from the itunes player. This is all explained in
the manual. People need to read the manual. It
is on the cd that came with the player or avail-
able on the insignia website.
I think this is a great little player for the
price. The controls are easy to use and I like
the fact that the wheel can also be used to scroll
with. Which is handy for adjusting the volume. The user replaceable battery, the QVGA 2.2″ screen
two headphone jacks (one can also be used as a line-in jack for recording from other devices), FM tuner, and the ability to play videos and movies, listen to audio books, display photos,
make this player a great deal for the price. The
screen is sharp and clear which makes playing
videos and movies on it a pleasure. It comes
with software to convert videos and movies to
mpg4 which can then be installed on the player.

The player can also be used with windows media
player and windows exployer. You do not have to
install the Best Buy media player to use the
player with unless you want to take advantage of
their music deal. It works with other music
stores also including Itunes. The manual has
instructions for how to install music using Itunes.

yea u sed that it is bad for people who are left handed but there is actually a way to flip it all around so it is for a lefty. You have to go to settings, then display, then set it for left hand or right hand then the screen flips according to what you have selected! : )

F*%k all this, if you really wanna get da most for your money buy an ipod touch, it is off the hook, but most of you lames are broke a$$ hell, so stick with the generic brands like insignia and coby which break down like 65% of their products.Oh Yeah Merry Christmas!

The mp3 Player works great, but I have had it since Christmas. Just the other day, when I was going through my songs, I couldn’t see the names of them. You could hear them but you couldn’t see the names. It says unknown on it. I can’t figure out how to fix it. So I don’t know what to do. It takes me 10 minutes to find a song.
